Introduction to Piracy

Internet Piracy is the illegal downloading of songs and other files off the Internet. Since its beginning, Internet piracy has become much more common and widespread than ever before, and is still becoming more and more popular. More than 2.6 billion song files are downloaded each month, which creates losses of over $2.5 billion a year, and causes many people to lose their jobs. This large amount of downloaded files has a very large impact on countless amounts of musicians, songwriters, and performers. The unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted music is just as illegal as shoplifting a CD. If someone makes unauthorized copies of copyrighted works, this is illegal and could make the person creating the copies held liable for thousands of dollars in damages. While there are dangers, there are still benefits. The most important and the one thing that can help the artist the most is exposure. Without exposure, people don't buy CDs, go to concerts, or by apparel. If people aren't going to concerts, the main source of income for artists, the artist will not be able to thrive, and will not be successful.
